In The Dark - Suspense and Horror

It's been long overdue, and after some demands on my life were made, I decided to make another 'In The Dark' video. I'm doing these a bit faster now, as I get accustomed to yakking in front of a camera so, if viewers/readers here at The Farthest Reaches are interested in seeing me goof-off in my dark studio some more, leave a comment so I know if I should keep staying up late and finding ridiculous ways to justify sitting alone in a dark room.

Remember! There are a few more of these videos if you enjoy this one: SOUND & PICTURES

Props to Anya Winter (@AnyaSWinter) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada who sent in a question about distinguishing the difference between horror stories and suspense stories.

  1. J, You are a nut-job! That was fabulous and great illustration of the difference between horror and suspense.

I happen to dislike fig newtons immensely, so it would've been "horror" for me to eat it, but I was in suspense waiting to see if you would!

  2. I picked the right prop, then, Eden! Good to know. In your case, it might have been bat wings and a flight out of the cavern. In mine, it might have been a trip to the hospital. I discovered that pack of fig newtons in the pantry and haven't had them since I was about eight years old. It was pretty intense at my place for a while last night.

Remember that ol' thing that Hitchcock once said? Something like, "If you show a gun in act one, you better sure as hell have that gun go off by act three." I deliberately went against this and didn't eat the fig newton. Technically, I didn't introduce it until act two...so I think Al would forgive me.

(Yeah, I *did* call him by his first syllable.)

  3. LOL :) I love it. I was in suspense waiting to see if you would eat that biscuit, and I was horrified that you didn't ;)

  4. A Fig Newton? This cracked me up. My husband would eat the whole package. Now I'll be wondering about his arteries and whether he will start flying in the dark.

Jason, there is something about watching your disembodied head, with an occasional floating hand or two, that fits perfectly with your writing style. :)

  5. According to www.thefreedictionary.com following are the definitions to which our host was alluding:

Horror: An intense, painful feeling of repugnance and fear.

Suspense: Pleasurable excitement and anticipation regarding an outcome.

Being the world-renowned wimp that I am, I will always pick suspense over horror. (Pleasure, if you please :)

Not quite sure if it qualifies as horror, but I most definitely have a repugnance for Fig Newtons. Give me Oreos, or Lorna Doones or any Pepperidge Farm variety, thank you very much!

Great video j! Always educational and entertaining at the same time!

Hey wait, I just realized what you said... are YOU Batman?

  6. I'm not sure if you're crazy or really smart. Since they aren't mutually exclusive, I'll go with both. The creepy dark surroundings, your stark image, disturbing elevator music, and...a cookie?

This was fun to watch and informative to boot. :)

  8. Maria, my hope was to horrify AND suspend with that cookie dangling there -- glad you fell prey to my technique!

  9. The disembodied head, Darcia? I thought you all knew! I actually only exist as a head and hands floating in a void. I actually LIVE in the Farthest Reaches. Tut, tut. Shame on me, I should have been more up front about this.

  10. Yes, Ann. I am Batman. Well, uh, just on weekdays. Saturdays and Sundays they call me Captain Daddy-O.

  11. Raquel, I'll take your comment as a huge compliment. Not just the smart part, either, but also the crazy part. I agree: these attributes often hold hands on a quiet moonlit beach...in the southern hemisphere of Jupiter.

  12. Don't feel pity for the fig, Steena. It knows its fate as soon as it's packaged at the plant. Crazy? Me? I'm personifying a cookie...I suppose there's a bit of crazy smooshed in there somewheres.

  13. You are not alone in the dark if we are watching; even if it is delayed . .

Gimme the who fig newton Dude. I can't believe you didn't eat it, and to hell with the cholestero fear. Its a cookie - eat it!

Good points to consider though. Very interesting instruction :)

  14. I like that: I am not alone in the dark as long as you are watching. Genius.

You can't believe I didn't eat it, Donna? You're not paying close enough attention, then. :) It's like a choose your own adventure story. If you want me to have eaten it, I ate it. If you didn't, I didn't.

So glad you could come by, Donna! Always happy to see you here in the Reaches.

  15. Jason...you may be in the dark, but you are always the bright spot in my day. Thank you for the fabulous cookie tutorial. My favorite cookie would be one of suspense with creamy horror filling..yummy!
    Thas all I got,

  16. And let's be honest, shall we, Kimba? That vid was much more about the cookie than ANYthing else!

  17. I thought this video was SO funny. Great job j - I think this is just an elaborate ploy to get me to buy more cookies - I mean, if it's for the sake of your writing.

  18. Either that, Ky, or it's a cry for help from someone simply addicted to cookies. ( "Heeeeeelp meeeeee!" )
