Behind The Words // Jeannie Walker

Jeannie Walker first came to my attention at Goodreads. She was one of my first contacts on that website and we've remained in touch over the last two years as we have each finished and released novels subsequent to our debuts.

Her first well-received novel comes from a dramatic real-life experience she endured ("Fighting the Devil") and as you'll discover from Jeannie herself, that was the first in a string of non-fiction inspirations for her writing. Without further from me, I give you Ms. Jeannie Walker...

Jeannie on her writing space...

I am lucky in that I live in the country and have my own office with plenty of windows where I can watch and listen to birds singing when I am not writing.

Jeannie on her current work...

I am currently working on another true story. Because my first true story “Fighting the Devil” was met with great success and awards – I began writing more true stories. I just finished a children’s book “The Rain Snake” and a true story about my near death experience “I Saw the Light”.

The true story I am working on now is about my encounter with a ghost. I am hoping to have it finished this summer.

Jeannie on her working style...

I use an iMac that Steve Jobs supplied me with. However, I still get out my yellow legal pad and write things down, so that I don’t forget my thoughts when I am away from my computer.

I love doing research and take a lot of notes. I like to put research in my books that will let people learn something they did not know.

I use Stephen King’s advice and try to write at least 3 hours every day.

My editing style: Put my thoughts and research down – re-read it as I look for spelling and grammar mistakes. Then, I pare my first draft down by 10% - the formula for success that Stephen King advises.

Jeannie on her support team...

My husband thinks I am glued to my desk and computer. He has started doing the cooking to keep from losing weight as I am usually so engrossed in writing that I forget about the time.

He understands that writing is my hobby and is a hobby that I love. He has his hobby too – woodworking. We give each other as much space as needed, since we both believe enjoying life and each other’s company is what brings happiness.

My husband will bring me iced tea and even peel an apple or orange and bring to me, if I have been working for a couple of hours at my computer.

    1. Oh thank you for stopping in, Maria! Funny, but you don't seem like a writer with a messy desk! Maybe you should share a pic! You're always welcome to come back to the Reaches for an encore appearance.

  3. LOL, I would have to tidy my desk if I was to share a pic... I'd be too embarrassed of the mess. I might take you up on the offer of an encore appearance when I publish my next novel :) Thanks.
